Anne of Green Gables has been a classic children's novel since the mid-20th century, although it is considered suitable for all ages. It tells of an orphan girl, Anne Shirley, sent in error to two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. They originally hoped for a boy to help them on their farm in Avonlea. The novel recounts how Anne makes her way through life with the Cuthberts, in school, and within the town.
