Philo is on the run from her abusive husband, Tommo, so desperate to escape that she has left her beloved children behind. Gradually, the nuns allow her into their lives, and before long she's teaching them how to be bingo callers, and setting up games of Blind Date in the day-care centre. With a heart as big as her waistband and the ability to make even the most stony-faced crack a grin, Philo artlessly brings out the best in people. Through an unlikely mix of Blind Date, cabaret singing and banger car racing, she puts heart back into a community that has given in - and ultimately brings about the end of the 'Vegetable Wars', which have raged bitterly for decades between two rival shopkeepers.
