It is 1939 and Jackie and Mary are just two of the millions of ordinary Londoners whose lives are to be changed forever. Unmarried yet very much in love, the coming of war stimulates a transformation in them both, as Jack becomes inveigled in underworld activities and Mary is changed almost beyond recognition.
