Concentrating almost solely on his generalship, Marshall (British and European history, Bath Spa U. College, UK) studies the career of Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) as it developed through the English Civil War and his wars in Ireland and Scotland. In assessing Cromwell's tactics and strategies, as well as his ability to fill the expectations of the Early Modern concept of the "heroic general," the conclusions of Marshall are generally positive.
