'Life burns hot', 15-year-old Fergus O'Brien's mother tells him in the summer of 1846. Before the end of the year, Fergus watches his family and home collapse in flames and is thrust on a journey from County Clare to the docks of Liverpool, the navvy camps along the railway construction in Wales, and ultimately across the Atlantic.
